Middle Grey — what a rendered image is actually doing

About

A register, not a magazine

Every entry starts from something physical you could put on a table — a chrome ball, a grey card, a colour checker — and works outward to what the renderer does with it.

What this is

artween.com publishes one thing under the standing title Middle Grey: an account of what a rendered image is actually doing, explained from the objects on the stage floor rather than from the software. The spheres, the charts and the passes that make a synthetic object sit inside a real photograph.

Every entry starts from something physical. A chrome ball. A grey card. A colour checker. From there it works outward to what the renderer does with it, and stops when the useful part is finished rather than when the word count is.

How it is organised

Five sections, twenty-four entries. Each entry is numbered, and each row of the register says what that entry settles, so a reader can decide from the list rather than from a headline.
