Aldo Kroese - Definte Events
From 06/02/2009 to 27/02/2009
Definite Events shows the result of a three months residency of Dutch artist Aldo Kroese [The Hague, 1976]. On invitation of the Pantheon Cultural Association, Nicosia, Cyprus, he took part in an ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY program from 01 November 2008 to 01 February 2009. Starting point of the research is water. Being Dutch, Aldo Kroese is confronted with water every day. The people in Holland have a great history when it comes to fighting the threat of water. Nowadays they have learnt to live with water. The difference between Holland and Cyprus on this subject is enormous. Holland is threatened by vast amounts of water from the rivers, the rising sea level and an increasing rainfall. Cyprus, on the other hand, is suffering from its absence. During an earlier visit to Cyprus, Aldo became fascinated by this contrast. The ?water problem' is a well know, fundamental, global theme. Subject to many projects and research on environmental, political and social levels. Aldo approaches the subject from a poetic viewpoint. He experiments with the different qualities of water and creates ?events'. He uses water both as a medium and a subject matter, entwining them with everyday objects.Working with themes like time and movement; he shows a process that results in a sculpture. The so-called action sculpture sometimes exists for a short moment and is therefore documented by photo or video.Aldo studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He has shown works at different exhibitions in and outside of the Netherlands. For this project he received a grant from Stroom Den Haag.www.aldorado.nl
